Donald Trump won’t “turn his back” on Colorado when it comes to legal marijuana, GOP lawmaker says

A top Republican lawmaker in Colorado is casting doubt on whether Donald Trump’s administration will crack down on the legalization of marijuana, saying the new president wouldn’t “turn his back” on states’ rights.

Colorado Senate President Pro Tem Jerry Sonnenberg, the chamber’s No. 2 Republican and a Trump supporter, reacted after the statement from White House spokesman Sean Spicer that recreational pot will face “greater enforcement.”

“I’m not sure I’d put too much thought or too much credit into what he was saying,” Sonnenberg told reporters Monday morning. “This president has been all about federalism and giving the states more authority, this just flies in the face of that. So I would anticipate not much coming from that.”

Gov. John Hickenlooper downplayed the suggestion a day earlier in a “Meet the Press” interview, affirming that he didn’t believe the federal government would target states like Colorado that legalized weed.

Colorado U.S. Sen. Cory Gardner has suggested a change in federal policy toward states on marijuana is unlikely, but Sonnenberg’s comments are the most forceful Republican pushback against the White House on the issue since the announcement Thursday.

End ‘Federal Bullying’ of Marijuana, Says Colorado Congressman

WASHINGTON – Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.) said every state in the nation should be able to legalize marijuana without “federal bullying” or interference.

“We’re well beyond the stage of determining whether Colorado made the right decision. Colorado’s model is working – more popular among our voters in Colorado than ever before. And voters in other states have been emboldened to follow suit in different forms with regard to allowing the regulated sale of marijuana,” Polis said during the official launch of the Congressional Cannabis Caucus with Reps. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.), Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.) and Don Young (R-Alaska).

“Our next challenge is to take the model established in Colorado and Oregon and Washington and Alaska and enable all states to follow it free of federal bullying and federal interference,” he added.

The lawmakers called for the federal government to end its “prohibition” of marijuana and provide “legal marijuana businesses” with the same federal tax treatment.

Colorado sells more than $1 billion of marijuana in 2016

DENVER (AP) — Newly released state figures show Colorado’s marijuana dispensaries sold $1.3 billion worth of recreational and medical pot in 2016.

The Denver Post reports that the Colorado Department of Revenue released tax data Thursday showing the third straight year for growth since the state legalized recreational marijuana sales.

Last year’s total pot sales were up from about $996 million in 2015 and $699 million the previous year.

According to the 2016 data, recreational marijuana accounted for $875 million of the sales total, while $438 million of medical pot was sold.

Colorado brought in close to $200 million in tax and fees revenue last year.

Marijuana tax revenue helps fund school construction projects and goes toward other areas such as public health and law enforcement.
